Kevin Hears the Mother Ship
“Kevin Hears the Mother Ship” is a metaphor for humanity’s varying concepts of God and paths to enlightenment. Using feline figures as stand-ins for humans, surrealist artist Ellen Hosafros explores her personal spiritual journey spanning from participation in traditional religion as a child to her current embrace of agnostic theism. In the painting, “Kevin,” who is gazing outward from the bottom of the canvas, has a sudden realization that God is real but is conflicted as to what to do next…seek out the supreme being on his own? Go the route of religion? But which one? The painting illustrates varying paths traveled. The orange figures who cluster in pews on the right reflect traditional systems of faith practiced worldwide in churches, synagogues, mosques, temples, etc. The figure carrying the lantern denotes sacred leaders who light the way. The larger blue figure on the bottom right represents the atheist who rejects any notion of a supreme being or participation in religious institutions. The figure perched at the bottom of the stairs, as well as the small individual in the distance who seems to gaze at the sacred leader, represent agnostics who acknowledge a divine creator but choose to embark on individual journeys to enlightenment. The orange being on the pedestal, lower left, spends a lifetime in service to humanity, seeking the divine through personal sacrifice. Which path will Kevin take?

Is the piece framed or gallery wrapped, and wired properly?
Yes
What is the MEDIUM of the piece? (ie: acrylic, watercolor, mixed media, clay sculpture, etc.)
Oil on canvas
What is the inspiration behind your piece?
I enjoy creating surrealistic oil paintings and using cartoon-like creatures to add a surprising twist. Most of my ideas come to me in dream, and I often embed symbols that appear to me when asleep. Also, I really love cats.
