Leaves of Support
Deciduous trees shed leaves to conserve water, revealing patterns and scars in their bark. Extreme heat and drought triggered by climate change causes this shedding out of season, stunting their growth and shortening their lives. Imagine approaching this piece outside. Twin trees support each other as one bears human-induced scars. The leaves initially protect the trunk and heart, but slowly the branches reach out, extending their leaves to ask for your support while allowing water to collect and flow off. The leaves fall to the earth, reflecting the ghosts of their former selves against the sky. This piece can be arranged with the trees arm-in-arm or back-to-back where although stronger, they can never share an embrace. How will humans pattern their and all trees’ fate? Let us dream of a future where humans support nature and each other.

What is the inspiration behind your piece?
Trees are strong and excellent providers. When I was facing a personal hardship, I began imagining what it would be like if a tree could actually hug someone. I used steel to represent strength, clay to represent connection to the earth, the height appropriate for a viewer to kneel or sit and interact with, and configurable side-by-side or back-to back because we need different types of support at different times.
